Scholars raise funds for Pakistan flood relief

Rhodes Scholars and friends at fundraiser for PakistanRhodes Scholars have once again demonstrated their commitment towards ‘fighting the world’s fight’, by responding to the humanitarian crisis which has resulted from severe flooding in Pakistan.  Current Pakistani Scholars Mohammed Rai (Pakistan & Magdalen 2009), Sara Khalid (Pakistan & Oriel 2008) and Mudassar Kamran (Pakistan & Magdalen 2007) recently organised and hosted a fundraising dinner in collaboration with the Oxford University Islamic Society and the Oxford University Pakistan Society, raising £3100.  All proceeds were directed to the Disasters Emergency Committee Pakistan Floods Appeal and the UM Healthcare Trust, which is working in some of the most remote regions of the country.

Meanwhile Pakistani Scholar-elect Soufia Siddiqi (Pakistan & St Anne’s 2010), who will be coming up in October, has raised a further £750 through appeals to the Rhodes community.  She is supporting a food disbursement campaign which collects readymade, pre-packaged, dry and instant foods for transportation to isolated areas.  The particular focus is on providing food to Charsadda, Khyber-paktunkhwa and Muzaffargarh, Laal Peer, Kot Addu in the Punjab and details of the trip can be viewed at The People's Disaster Managment.  For further information, please visit http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/page/relief-appeal-for-pakistan.
