GERMAN RHODES SCHOLARS HONOURED AT OXFORD EUROPEAN REUNION

As the long-standing links between Oxford and Germany were celebrated at the Oxford European Reunion in Berlin on 7 November, two German Rhodes Scholars who were executed for their roles in resistance to Hitler were especially remembered.

TWO COURAGEOUS RHODES SCHOLARS REMEMBERED

Memorial lectures have been held in Oxford this week to honour two Rhodes Scholars, both elected for 1931, Adam von Trott (Germany & Balliol) and Bram Fischer (Orange Free State & New College), who showed great courage and paid very dearly for their roles in the struggles against tyranny in their home countries. The Warden and a number of current Rhodes Scholars attended both lectures.

Many in the Rhodes Community join the Warden in extending warm birthday greetings to George Cawkwell (New Zealand & Christ Church 1946) on his 90th birthday. Dr. Cawkwell has served as a Fellow of University College, Oxford since 1949.

SIR ZELMAN COWEN TURNS 90

The Australian Government is marking the 90th birthday of former Governor-General of Australia, Sir Zelman Cowen (Victoria & New College 1941), with a gift of $200,000 towards the Zelman Cowen Gallery of Australian Jewish History at Melbourne's Jewish Museum of Australia. The Warden of Rhodes House, Dr Donald Markwell, telephoned Sir Zelman to congratulate him warmly on this landmark birthday.

Evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro (Georgia & Balliol 1999) has been named a MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for her research investigating how evolution occurs through time. Previous Rhodes Scholar MacArthur Fellows include Guy Davenport (North Carolina & Merton 1948), John Edgar Wideman (Pennsylvania & New College 1963), James Collins (New Hampshire & Balliol 1987), Atul Gawande (Ohio & Balliol 1987), and Jay Rubenstein (Oklahoma & St John's 1989).
